The Railway Children

October 2016

Play

This beloved tale by E.Nesbit tells the story of three well-to-do children from London who have to relocate to the countryside with their mother after their father goes away "on government business". They move to a small village with a railway station and have to adjust to a new, less decadent life in the country. They are befriended by Perks who works at the station and his large family of children who are a little different to their usual peers. Whilst at first the social standing differences between the youngsters is striking, they soon form a fast friendship leading to many adventures along the way with the station and its trains being at the forefront. ? A delightful story that all ages can enjoy. Whilst the "action" in the original story takes place in a Northern town we have used poetic licence and moved it to Upton Upon Severn which had its own railway station at the time. The photos below have been used with kind permission from Mrs E Loynes of the Taylor family who lived at Upton station (seen in the group photo below) with her sisters Rachel & Monica & her brother Chris. Her youngest brother Adrian not in the photo, was yet to be born in the Station house.Their father Mr E. Taylor, Station Master, can be seen in the photo alongside the sign for Upton. Many thanks also to Mr B.W.L. Brooksbank for use of images ? Show runs Weds 26th - Sat 29th Oct. Tickets 7 from Upton Launderette on sale from Sept 26th
